The Story Behind the Togo Sofa

The Togo sofa arrived in 1973, designed by Michel Ducaroy for the French house Ligne Roset. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, Ducaroy sketched a seat with no frame and no legs, made entirely of foam. The idea reportedly came from a folded aluminum toothpaste tube on his bathroom sink.

It was unveiled that year in Paris and met with skepticism. A sofa without a base was a strange thing to sell. The low, wrinkled shape, sometimes likened to a Shar-Pei, won people over anyway. The Togo took the design world’s attention and never left production in the decades that followed.

More than 1.2 million Togo pieces have been made since. Owners range from design collectors to Lenny Kravitz, who reportedly keeps four. The line grew from a single three-seater into a full range: armchair, footstool, corner module and multiple sofa sizes in leather and fabric.

Togo Couch Questions, Answered

Common questions about the Togo sofa, from who designed it to sizing, materials and how to pick a version.

Who designed the original Togo sofa?

Michel Ducaroy designed the Togo for Ligne Roset in 1973. The baseless, foam-only shape was his, and it has stayed in production ever since.

What sizes does the Togo sofa come in?

The range covers a fireside chair, a Togo sofa 2 seater and 3 seater, a footstool and a corner module, so pieces can be combined into a full set.

Is the Togo couch leather or fabric?

Both. The Togo comes in leather and in fabric, across colors such as green, white, navy and black. Covers are removable for cleaning.

What makes the Togo sofa unusual?

It has no wooden frame or legs. The whole seat is quilted foam sitting close to the floor, which gives the signature sink-in feel.

: How many Togo sofas have been made?

More than 1.2 million pieces have been produced since 1973, making it one of the most recognized sofa designs of the last fifty years.

Which Togo size fits a small room?

The fireside chair or the 2 seater suit tighter spaces. Because the line is modular, larger rooms can add corner elements or a footstool.

What Togo Owners Say

Feedback from buyers who picked the Togo sofa for its shape, its low profile and its everyday comfort.

Bearded man outdoor portrait

Bought the 3 seater in green fabric. The low seat takes a day to get used to, then you never want to leave it. Fits the living room better than expected.

Daniel R.

Woman with glasses portrait

Went with the 2 seater in leather after seeing the original in a friend’s flat. Same slouchy shape, holds up well with two kids and a dog around it daily.

Marta K.

Man wearing glasses portrait

Added the fireside chair to match an older Togo I already had. Colors lined up fine and the quilting looks identical. Comfortable for reading in evenings.
